Union Pacific plans efforts to help environment

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Union Pacific plans to participate in more than 50 Earth Day activities in April to recognize the railroad's efforts to help the environment. Union Pacific's Bob Grimalia says the Omaha-based railroad tries to limit its impact on the environment whenever possible. That includes working to develop hybrid locomotives for use in railyards to reduce diesel fuel emissions.

Union Pacific also strives to improve its fuel efficiency. It estimates that employee programs designed to encourage more efficient locomotive driving helped save 58 million gallons of diesel in 2008
